STARFISH PARABLE

Once upon a time there was a philosopher who would walk along the beach every morning thinking about how to help the world.

One day as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a figure moving back and forth, rhythmically dancing to the day.

This gave him great pleasure, so he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young woman and the young woman wasn't dancing, but instead she was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.

When he got closer he called out, 'Good morning! What are you doing?'

The young woman looked up and replied with simple joy, 'Throwing starfish in the ocean.'

The man looked puzzled and said: 'I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?'

'The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die.'

'But, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!' said the man.

The young woman listened politely. She then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea past the breaking waves and said with a smile...

'... but I made a difference to that one'.

BEDTIME STORIES

What was one of your favorite childhood memories? I remember sitting and playing Barbies for hours with my sisters, playing "mermaids" in the ocean, reading books as a family, riding bikes and the list goes on. The older I get the more I appreciate the quote on quote little things in life {like reading}, which in turn, are the bigger more meaningful things.

I remember lying in bed and having my back rubbed by my parents as they read our bedtime stories. Good Night Moon, Miss Rumphius and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, are the most prominent books I remember and loved. Even babysitting for my favorite families, I love the memories of lying in bed with the kids, rubbing their backs and reading books before tucking them into bed.

Once again, thank you to a more than generous donation from Shanna, she came to Panama with a load full of Childrens' Spanish books. From Dr. Sesus to Sponge Bob to Curious George the children sit in awe as I read each page. As I looked at their faces while reading, the memories of when I was a child began to flood my mind and bring me happiness. Reading plays an important role in the lives of every child. From the learning aspect to the intimate one on one time they share with family, friends or a role model. Realizing the importance of reading and the beautiful memories I have of reading, I decided to start a "Bedtime Story" outreach at the local orphanage. It is an amazing time to cuddle up with children, rub their backs and read.

I absolutely cherish the two hours I spend with them before bed. I can not begin to comprehend what life would be like without parents, yet these children are incredibly resilient and have more love to share than you could ever imagine. Last week, saying "Good night, sweet dreams" and giving them hugs, you could feel the love in the room. They are a true testimony that LOVE and will conquer the world. "One of the clearest ways we love 'with actions and in truth' is through giving to others... Giving that is not motivated by LOVE is worth nothing" Francis Chan {Crazy Love}.

LIVE TO LOVE

Shannita-Bonita! In the short amount of time that I have been in Panama, two of my best friends have visited, Kaitlin and Shanna. I feel incredibly blessed to share my dream, SSOL, and my new life with them!

Shanna and I have been through so much together...and I couldn't quite picture my life without her.

Her honesty, knowledge, openness and "allowing" God's plan to prevail makes her one of the most fascinating and beautiful women I have ever met. Everyday we spent together was a chance to learn and challenge one another, while continuing to build relationships with the children. Shanna and I have amazing and beautiful memories from Guatemala and I thank God for giving us a chance to create new ones. During her visit we were able to share our time and love with the people and children of Panama.

The majority of our conversations were centered around how can we live life by the Spirit and not by the Ego {aka the devil}. I know it is much easier said than done, but if we consciously choose LOVE, we can't help but view the world in a completely different way. I believe this Cherokee Proverb depicts the "battle" going on daily, inside of each of us.

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life...
"A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy.
"It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.
"One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.
"The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
"This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,

As you go forth in this day, I challenge you to make a conscience effort to live by and honor the SPIRIT. Try not to pass judgement, and try to see the world as God views the world - always forgiving, always honest, always compassionate, always joyful and ALWAYS LOVING...

RIVER BAPTISMS

You could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit as people surrendered their lives to Christ and were baptized in the river, outside of Boquete, Panama. On Sunday Shanna and I got to experience the beautiful celebration, five people accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!

NATURE HIKE

Everyday continues to affirm that I believe I am on the path God has intended for my life. Thanks to family and friends, who encouraged me to come down here with the mindset of "how can I help" and "what are the needs of the community," this advice has proven to be evidence of the most beautiful and honest way to help. I am incredibly thankful for all the opportunities that have presented themselves to me and never want to take one moment for granted.

I have been teaching at Alan and Debbie's Mission three days a week. Saturday's are an all day event...we have class in the morning and then we have our soccer game and whatever else the kids want to do. Last Saturday the kids and I decided to take a nature walk. We hiked through the coffee fields, picked oranges, raced up and down the mountain, crossed rivers and laughed hysterically together. I can not even express how grateful and happy I am to be here and have the ability to help His people.

SEPTEMBER 11th AND PSALM 37

Ten years ago today, I remember exactly where I was sitting and what I was doing when I heard the news of September 11. I believe it was my dad, who encouraged me to read Psalm 37. Ten years ago, I read the Psalm and highlight every verse. In the margin of my bible, I wrote "On September 11, 2001, a day that will make history." I thought you might find peace and comfort, as I did, by reading this Psalm.

PSALM 37
1 Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious of those who do wrong;
2 for like the grass they will soon wither,

FIRST KICKBALL GAME - PANAMA STYLE

Smiles, laughter and screaming "RUN FASTER" I felt like I was fifteen again! I have been volunteering at another local project two days a week. Yesterday I had the privilege of playing a two-hour long Kickball game. I went to the project and Jose, was sitting on the steps waiting for me. I was greeted with a giant hug and smile. He said "are you ready to play" holding up an old tattered soccer ball, I replied "of course I'm ready". I asked a few kids to play and next thing you know I have 20+ kids asking if they can join the game. It was an incredibly memorable afternoon and way to much fun. It is going down in history as one of the best afternoons ever!

I am officially a proud "renter" in Boquete Panama. The Lord blessed me with a beautiful apartment to call home. The doors are wide open for anyone who wants to come visit.

I've already had my first visitor! One of my best friends Kaitlin, spent the last two weeks with me helping me to get settled into my new life and home in Panama. We had an amazing time filled with tons laughter, daily devo's, volunteering, hikes, fruit and veggie fast and the list goes on...

She had the opportunity to utilize her profession as an RN working in the medical clinic (with the local Christian Ministry I have been helping out at) and she assisted in teaching English with my kids (or they assisted in teaching her Spanish)!

P.S. I wrote the last four blogs listening to "Wanderlust" (on repeat), by Frank Turner. Such a beautiful song.

The "S" letter must love me! Stingrays and Scorpions, I don't even want to think what other insects and animals begin with "S". As a child while we were living in Panama I was stung by a Stingray. Now, two weeks into living in Panama I was stung in the middle of the night not once BUT twice by a scorpion. At the time it wasn't funny but as the pain subsided and I knew I was going to be ok, Kaitlin and I were cracking jokes left and right about the whole incident. We had to find some humor in the situation since neither one of us could sleep for days. "Nice scorpion sting!"

And yes this is how I "slept" for a few days after the incident. I'm looking good, right?!

FIRST MONTH IN PANAMA

I can not believe it but, I have been in Panama for a month. I feel that I have been blessed beyond belief and have hit the ground running since I landing in Panama. My first week was filled with the excitement of being in a new environment flooded with the beauty of God's creation and new faces.

I came to Panama with the mind set of how can I help His people and His world. I want to listen and discover the needs in this community. Through a Godly string of events, I have been presented with a variety of opportunities to serve the community already. I have begun volunteering and translating at the local Orphanage and have become involved in a local Christian Ministry. I have started working with a youth group, teaching English classes, assisting in their medical clinic and soon will be starting a young women's bible study. I visited the comarca (an Indian Reservation)where many of the Indigenous Indians live and work. The sights at the Comarca definitely made me grateful for everything I have. Children walk upwards of six miles each way to attend a public school. God is laying it on my heart to go and live there for month or two.I want to fully comprehend and experience what these people go through each day. I am going to continue praying and see what the Lord has in store.

And, that was ONLY the first month. Only God knows what will slowly begin to unfold...I can't wait to see what he has in store for month two!

MY STORY

My blog from Panama will have a different approach than when I blogged from Guatemala. I will keep true to the amazing stories I am going to share, but I also want to focus on sharing about Jesus, giving people hope and encouragement (we are each meant to love and be loved), and being honest and open as a person. Additionally, I hope to find a place to turn to when I am feeling down, discouraged or overwhelmed with gratitude and the moments of happiness. I will be posting things that I find encouraging and inspirational. Perhaps, something I post could benefit you or a friend. My blogs will vary from bible verses, sermons, daily devotionals, excerpts from books, quotes, songs, friends, etc...

While living in Guatemala and my recent time in the States, my faith and relationship with God (the maker of Heaven and Earth) and Jesus (who died for our sins so that we may have eternal life) grew by leaps and bounds. The mindset of getting out of the boat and fulfilling God's will for your life can be one of the scariest things you ever do, but at the same time, it is the most rewarding! For me, being back in the States for an extended period of time confirmed even more that I believe I am on the path God has created for me. I realize not everyone is called into the Mission Field as I have been, but I believe each of us is given a dream from God. In order to really live life to the fullest, we must respond to His calling. In the book of Psalms it states: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over." Psalm 32:8 and "Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go for to you I lift up my soul. " Psalm 143:8.

I feel God has blessed me with resources and experiences that I want to share with the people I love. I can truly say that I have never been this happy in my life. I believe the root of happiness begins with living your earthly life for Jesus and His Kingdom. Put your identity in Him and not in material things, for those are constantly changing. I understand it is easier said than done. I struggle with trusting Him and His plan for my life. I get frustrated and question things but I do trust and believe His plan will ALWAYS prevail. Let go and Let God (Thanks Kim Register).

I know it has been forever since I have blogged and honestly I missed it. This pretty much sums up what I have been up too these last couple of months and what I'm praying will come to be.

Dear Family and Friends,
“For I know the plans I have for you,” (Jeremiah 29:11) declares the Lord. What would life be like if I didn’t give one-hundred percent of my life to God’s calling? God is calling, love is calling and I’ve decided to radically live my life for God. As most of you know, in January 2010, I made a one year commitment to volunteer with indigenous children through an education program in the country of Guatemala. There are many occasions that have brought me great happiness, but none as signi cant as when I lived in Guatemala. Every day I spent with the children was a blessing: through them God taught me about love, heartbreak, struggle, compassion, forgiveness
and what life is REALLY ABOUT! Even though my project in Guatemala has ended, my journey is just beginning. As 2010 came to an end, I looked to God for guidance and His next “plan” for my life. I am yearning to be the person He called me to be. His plan for my life is nally becoming a reality! I have decided to continue a life in
the mission field and started a non profit ministry called Sowing Seeds of Love (SSOL). Many of you may be wondering why I choose to start Sowing Seeds of Love in Panama, The answer, Pat Maines. We met at 2:00AM in the Panama City airport and from there God opened the doors and everything started unfolding.

The Focus of God’s Ministry (Sowing Seeds of Love):

• Phase 1: Building relationships, Listening, Learning and discovering the needs in the local community of Boquete, Panama.

• Phase 2: Create an interactive ministry for children, through sharing Jesus’ love, providing supplemental education, sports and creative activities.

• Phase 3: Encouraging Individual Empowerment.

God knew a lifetime ago that I would be boarding a plane to Boquete, Panama on July 23 to make His dream my reality. I am experiencing different emotions as my time comes closer but ultimately I am overwhelmed with joy and excitement for what the future holds. I am writing this heartfelt letter for a number of reasons. First, please keep me in your prayers as I take my second leap of faith. God can only answer prayers that are prayed!I believe that through trust and prayer, His project will succeed and change people’s lives. Secondly,I am solely responsible for funding this ministry. Since returning to the States, I have been working non-stop in hopes of raising money for this non-profit ministry. Financially, I cannot do this on my own. Any contribution amount will be truly appreciated. All contributions are tax deductible and will be used to help build Sowing Seeds of Love.

I am thankful for my Board of Directors (James Parry, Kim Register, Kaitlin Brennan, Pat Maines, Hoyt Byrum and Diane Byrum). Thank you from all of us for your prayers and for considering a contribution to SSOL. God gives us the gift of trust, and every day I thank Him for that. I know I must trust Him and ultimately His plan will prevail.

"DAY OF THE KITES"

One of the reasons I wanted to live in country for an extended amount of time is to fully understand and experience the cultures and traditions. A few weeks ago I got to experience first hand a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation known as 'Day of the Kites.'

Everyone was in constant anticipation of the days leading up to 'Day of the Kites.' Finally the day came and the kids were going CRAZY! The project was filled with happiness from everyone! It was amazing to watch these kids make kites with the most intricate and complicated designs. There little hands worked with such grace as they put so much thought and love into this one kite they got to make!

It is pure happiness when someone can stand for hours looking towards heaven, smiling ear to ear, flying a handmade kite out of tissue paper. I would see grandfathers, fathers and children all standing together smiling and laughing while flying them.

Last week after class I was walking down for lunch when I stopped myself to stare up and smile at all the kites flying above. I looked over and saw a father and his son flying a kite together laughing and having much fun. A few seconds later I couldn't help but to join in on their happiness and laugh uncontrollably with them. Something so simple makes them so happy isn't that is what life is all about?

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY

You have got to love the rainy season in Central America! I do not think I have ever seen so much rain in my life, everyday, all day long! Thanks to some generous donations we were able to provide 215 kids with raincoats. They were so excited to receive them and now they can make the trek to school without constantly getting soaked. Thanks to my amazing mom for reminding me of the rainy season and sending me off with a raincoat!

ENGLISH ANYONE?

I have a few takers!
Unfortunately when we do not have enough volunteers are only option is the cancel classes. I was a little heartbroken to hear that the kids wouldn't be coming to school because of no teacher. I decided to take action and talk to Doreen (the woman who runs the project) and see if one day I week I could take on the task of teaching English. She was so excited that I wanted to help with that aspect of the program.
I am officially the new English teacher one day a week. I know it is not much but it is something. I am working with kids with the "big" kids ages 13-18. I have been teaching English for a weeks now. They are really learning and it is great to see them excited to want to learn. It was been really fun getting to know and impacting these kids lives! Never can love too much! ROCKIN SOME NIKES

There are many things in this world that bring me happiness. But one in specific is being able to give to others. One little thing to you could mean the world to someone else. Last week I had the honor to give a brand new pair of Nike shoes to a little girl named Claudia.
While I was home in Florida I had a chance to see my favorite “American” kids Coleman, Evan, Lo Lo and Little H!!! They have been apart of my life for the last ten years and I consider the whole Jacobus clan my family. A few nights before I left they gave me these shoes to give to one of my kids in Guatemala. Finally after a month we had the perfect candidate to receive a new pair of kicks!

I wish I could have taken a video of her reaction when I gave them to her. She looked at me with the biggest smile and tears running down her checks and said “These are for me…I can take them home?” Then she leaped in my arms and thanked me over and over. I could not help it but seeing how happy she was my eyes were flooded with tears. It was an amazing feeling knowing those little shoes will give her feet a whole new view of walking! And she looks so freaking cute with the Nikes and her indigenous skirt!

GUATEMALAN GAZELLE

A half marathon in Guatemala sounded like the perfect challenge and a great memory to add to my life here! On Sunday with a few friends from here we ran the BAM 21K in Guatemala City. There was over 5,000 people that ran and it was one of the best races I have ever done. There were thousands of people lined down all the streets cheering everyone on and bands on every other street corner jamming out. It was such a great race and I felt really strong running! 1:57 minutes not too bad for me!

In the community I volunteer in majority of the women wear their indigenous dress. The skirt, top and faja(belt) are so beautiful and laced with the most intricate details. Ever since I got here I have wanted a faja. I think it would look deadly with a high waisted skirt! :)
A few weeks ago one of the girls in my morning class Adela and her brother Byron in my afternoon class, invited me over to their home because their family had a present for me. Their mom had made me a beautiful faja!! I was in complete shock when they gave it to me. The mom and dad just kept thanking my over and over again saying how happy the kids were with me and that they actually learning, having fun and the test scores were were improving. It was one of those really awarding moments in life that you hope you will never forget what you felt like!

WOW, it was amazing to see my kids after five weeks. You know that feeling when you are anxiously anticipating the next morning and you can’t sleep the night before? Well that is how I was on Sunday night before I headed back to the project. I was so looking forward to seeing my kids I couldn’t not wait to see those smiles. I leaped off the bus and there they all were! My whole class jumped on me and kept screaming my name. Those were the best hugs. It was awesome to see them. Actually everyday that I am blessed with seeing them I consider the best day of my life. These kids have impacted my life in so many different ways. Every moment with them I thank God for each of them. They bring me so much happiness it is pure joy.

The other day one of the little boys in my afternoon class gave me a gift—corn head Lindsey! Ha ha How freaking cute is that? I love how these kids use their imagination and the little resources they have to make something so special for me. I was so happy when he gave it to me that I stared crying. It was one of the best gifts ever!

CENTRAL AMERICA HECHO!

After my trip home my friend Shanna met me in Florida and we flew to Panama together. We had a few weeks to travel and figured this was a perfect opportunity see more of Central America. We did have one HUGE goal in mind though. After months of Shanna and I getting to know each other we finally figured out how and why we have such an incredible connection. I truly believe that God put her in my life for a reason and that reason is to start a non-profit organization together somewhere in Central America! We got the best of most worlds, traveling, meeting people and narrowing down where we want to start something. It is really exciting time. Now the work begins…with all the paperwork! I am looking forward to what the big man has planned…

Flying into Panama City we spent a few days in the city sight seeing and where my family and I use to live in Panama. It was so cool to be back there! Then we headed up to Boquete where we went hiking, white rafting, volunteered at an orphanage and met some unbelievable people that were so ecstatic about what we wanted to do with our lives. Then by bus we worked our way from Panama to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. We hiked volcanoes, went surfing, saw some ruins, and visited different churches and landmarks. It was a really great trip and a lot of fun having a chance to see all of these countries.

Now these three remain faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love. Love was beaming radiantly from my sister Melody and her husband BJ (my brother yay!) on July 3rd. It was such an amazing day to watch my sister marry the man of her dreams. It is funny because I was so emotional the week leading up to the wedding and then at the rehearsal I started crying. I wasn’t sure how I would ever keep it together for the real wedding day. But the moment I saw Melody walk down the aisle and Brent’s face just lit with the most beautiful smile. My heart was overwhelmed with joy and I couldn’t not stop smiling. Actually NO ONE could stop smiling!
Everything about the day was perfect… being with family and friends, laughter and smiles everywhere you looked, Melody was absolutely gorgeous, I know she is my sister but I can honestly say I have never seen a more beautiful bride and her happiness just escalated her beauty to the next level, Brent and my Dad looked stunning in their suits (Dad finally has a son! Ha), Katie and the bridesmaids looked beautiful in their sassy blue dresses and Mom was breathtaking in her pink dress. Wow, I love my family so much. Sometimes I can not comprehend how I am so lucky to be blessed with each of them.

Who is next in line for marriage….Katie or ME? NO SE! I'm going to put money on Katie! :)

After the wedding I got to spend two weeks in Florida! It was so nice to be home and spending time with family and friends. I had a blast catching up with everyone. Once again I am so lucky to be blessed with great friends that are so supportive of me and what I am doing. Thank you all for that. I miss everyone back home but Guatemala definitely has my heart now and that was so evident when I was home. Man it feels good to be back here!

MAIZ Y AZUCAR

Thank you all who donated to help with the relief fund for Tropical Storm Agatha. As a whole GVI raised close to $32,000!! Amazing! Every penny is going to be used to help out the families of the two communities our projects are in, Santa Maria de Jesus (the project I work at) and Izatpa.

The first bulk of money went to provide hundreds of families with 100 pounds of maiz (corn) and a bag of azucar (sugar). Here are a few pictures from that day. It was a really special day to be apart of. Every singe person was incredibly thankful. This food will last the families at least one month so we can guarantee our kids are getting something to eat daily!

REBULIDING

The last month has been quite emotional for me as I have learned about the aftermath of tropical storm Agatha. I know natural disasters happen all over the world but this one directly affected the people who I have spent everyday with for the last five months. Homes and crops destroyed and lives were lost. Knowing that people had gone without food/water for at least a week and have lost everything they had.

I have started really feeling connected to these people and this community but now I am feeling even more connected on a deeper level. I had the chance to go and help clean up and WOW what I saw was unreal. People’s “homes” were filled with 3-4 feet of mud and massive rocks had barreled down off the volcanoes and now were left for people move-manually. Which is what I have the honor of doing! For weeks now I have worked with a team for four people and my crow bar and we have moved these massive rocks by hand. Kind of crazy but again it goes to show how people work with what they have.

These people are resilient! They now they must continue to move forward and help each other out in any way possible. Everyday is a fight for survival for them…

FAMILIAR FACES

A week filled with beautiful, smiling and familiar faces! One of my best friends Kaitlin came to visit me in Antigua. It was so great to see her and catch up plus I got to show her my life down here which was really cool. It was three blissful days filled with so much laughter, meaningful conservation and it was so nice to finally see a familiar face! So, Kaitlin left Wednesday morning and then waiting for me on the street corner was Barb Lehner! Round two with another friend! Again it was really great to see Barb and catch up. And she brought along a few cute guys! Ha ha
After months of anticipation I finally got to see MY FAMILY!!! Thanks to everyone I got to fly in for less than 48 hours to see my beautiful little sister graduate. All five of us plus “Aunt” Jill together….what more could I ask for? Then Sunday my mom and Melody are dropping me off at the airport at 6AM and there waiting for me is my little man Jack and Ashley!!! Wow! Awesome surprise and the best ending to a perfect 48 hours.
Between family, friends and my kids I really don’t think life could be anymore perfect! I love you guys!

Just a "typical" Saturday, I got to hike the third highest volcano in Guatemala--HECHO! It was quite the challenge but eight hours later we were at the top. Wow, what an amazing experience and memory.

The kids are great, my Spanish is great, Guatemala living is great…basically things could not get any better! I know I have said this to many of you but I honestly still can not believe I am living here and fulfilling my dream. I truly believe that when something is meant to be everything will fall into place perfectly!

Teaching the kids is going really good. It keeps getting easier and easier as my Spanish improves. Plus I am re-learning everything I was taught as a kid (fractions, judicial system etc…) in Spanish.

Sorry, I have been slacking a little on introducing my kids. Second time is the charm hopefully.

Bayron- I am fairly certain that the majority of adolescence boys have had a crush on their teacher at some point in their life. Well my little man Bayron loves himself some Seno Lindsey! Haha. Every afternoon he paces back and forth waiting for me to walk out of the house we have lunch in. He greets me with a ton of hugs, carries my backup up the hill to school and holds my hand down the road. I love knowing that everyday he is out there anxiously awaiting me. It started with him just carrying my backpack but now written in his notebook it says: Bayron loves Seno Lindsey and my name is written all over his notebook with hearts around it. Plus I have gotten quite a few love letters!
Besides his love for me he is truly a special kid that holds an even more special place in heart. He is always happy, always smiling and so full of love. He is one of the poorest children at our school. Go figure, he has nothing expect love for everyone. It definitely makes you think…

Rosa AKA “Beatcie”- Wow, she is one of the most beautiful little girls I have ever seen. She has stolen the hearts of all the boys in my class and basically every older boy at the school too. It is so funny to watch on birthday days to see the boys’ line up to dance with her. There are not enough songs for how many people want to dance with her. I think I might have had a few boys mad at me on Friday when all she wanted to do was dance with me!
She actually reminds me a lot of myself as a little girl…basically she can not be bothered with school. All she is interested in is socializing with me, her friends and flirting with the boys- exactly how I was!!

SEMANA SANTA

The city has a festive feel celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus as the streets are adorned with alfombras (hand-made carpets with intricate detail made of flowers, sawdust, vegetables and the list goes on), purple flags, candles and processions.

Everything about being able to experience this tradition is amazing. People spend hours and hours making these alfombras only to be destroyed in a matter of seconds as hundreds of people walk over the carpets carrying floats that depict different events of surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus. These floats can weigh thousands of pounds and anywhere from 25-100 people on each side carry them for miles and miles all over Antigua.

My host family made an alfombra for the Procession that passed in front of our house and I had the opportunity to help make it! It was great to be able help with it. People make these carpets to show their appreciation and gratitude to Jesus for dying for our sins.

CHANGING A FAMILIES LIFE BY BULIDING A STOVE

The more I learn about GVI I am always in awe with how involved they get with the communities they work in. One of the other projects they do is building stoves for families.

Just to give you a visual of how most of the families here live. Their home consists of if they are lucky one wall of concrete and the rest made out of corn stalks and metal sheets as the roof. Typically their home is one room. In this room they cook and sleep. As stated on the GVI website “indoor wood smoke is a greater health issue than malaria” these families are breathing in this indoor smoke 24 hours a day everyday of their live. This causes serious health and respiratory problems. A lot of the kids at the school constantly are coughing and their noses are surrounded by black dust.

This past Thursday presented me with a rare opportunity. A woman had come down to build stoves for a week in the community I work in and unfortunately it was just too intense of a job for her and she was unable to return her second day to finish the stove. I have been dying to build a stove for a family since I got here and when I heard she wasn’t coming up to Santa Maria that day I asked if I could finish up the stove. Everyone was shocked by my willingness and excitement to take on the challenge. I was thrilled walking to this family’s house with Alberto, the mason who I finished up the stove with.

It was really humbling walking into their house and knowing that building this stove would change their lives in so many ways!

Most of you reading my blog know me and know that I have never participated in extreme manual labor before (well besides pressure washing with my family and BJ) ha ha! That is not the issue anymore! Here is what my Thursday consisted of, I started off carrying 75lbs bags of rocks and concrete, then mixing concrete with my bare hands and a handmade shovel, cut rebar, laid bricks, cemented the whole thing and then smoothed it out for the beautiful finale of a STOVE!! When we were done I felt such a sense of accomplishment. When I got to present the family with the stove the mom started crying out of gratitude and the kids were screaming with joy. I had to just stop and thank God for that amazing opportunity in my life. It was honestly one of the best days of my lives. Having the chance to see these kids overwhelmed with excitement over a stove and their parents smile is an image that is forever embedded into my memory!

MEANT TO BE

The ole’ saying goes that God doesn’t put people in our lives that we want but people that we need. I truly believe that God put each of these kids in my life for reason. My blog a few weeks ago stated how I was already so in love with these kids but now it is a bond for life. I am completely attached and each one has their own special talents or quirks. I have now been in their lives constantly for seven weeks. As a result of them seeing me daily they trust me, rely on me and love me. Each day it seems that the bond between us gets stronger and stronger.

I know not everyone is going to get to come visit me but I want you to get to know the kids who have my heart. I figured the best way of going about “introducing” you to them is writing about a few of them each week. Here we go…

Marianna - I know you are not supposed to have favorites but I do have a few and she is most definitely one of them. She sits in the front row and loves any lesson I plan that involves reading or spelling. Once a month at school we celebrate birthdays and dance. I have been here for two and both times she latched on to me and we danced away and laughed! At the end of class on Friday she came up to me and said “Seno Lindsey, I have never had anybody dance with me before. You made me so happy. I love you.” As soon as she walked away my eyes swelled up with tears. The simplest things in the world make these kids happy and love is all they want!

Auri – She is one of the cutest little girls I have ever seen with a smile that lights up the whole room. She is one of the smarter kids in my class and loves learning anything I teach. From math to reading to insects and teeth, they are all her favorite. Everyday she comes into class and asks what we are going to do and she always screams and says “Oh Seno Lindsey that is my favorite! I have come to realize that there is no better feeling in the world than having one of the children tell you how much they love you and are thankful for you and the other is getting a letter from them. These kids hardly have anything and work before and after school. For them to take the time out of their crazy days and write a letter really means a lot. So, I got my first letter last week and wow! That is a memory and feeling I will never forget. Her card said that I was the most intelligent, beautiful and loving teacher she has ever had, that she is learning a so much from me wants to become a teacher just like me one day and that she loves more than anything in the world with all of her heart and soul.

Letters like that and having kids tell me they love me and I am helping them is WHY I AM HERE! My friend Zee gave me this amazing daily devotional book before I left for my trip. Every morning I do a devotional but one really stood out and I read it everyday now. Here is a small blurb “When you decide on a course of action that is in line with My will, nothing is heaven or on earth can stop you. You may encounter many obstacles as you move toward your goal, but don’t be discouraged-never give up! With my help, you can overcome any obstacle.” (Jesus Calling by: Sarah Young) When I read that I felt like God was speaking directly to me. Moving to a third world country and helping to do my part in this world is something I have wanted for so long. As I look back at my life and how things happen and everything fell into place perfectly for Guatemala there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this is what God made me to do in my life!!!

FIRST MONTH

Today is officially my one month anniversary of living here (And my little sister’s 18th Birthday)!
In just the little time that I have been here I already have so many amazing memories that will stay with me for a lifetime.

I have been teaching now for three weeks and it keeps getting better and better. Every morning I have about eight-ten kids who sit on the street corner and wait for me to show up. They get so excited to see me and hug and kiss me a million times. I love knowing that they count on me each day, that I am able to make them smile and allow them to be kids for a few hours before the realities of everyday life and survival occur.

I had one of those great moments the other day at school…I was teaching them about decompositions and adding/subtracting three digit numbers and all the kids were struggling and not grasping the concept. Seeing that I quickly re-worked my lesson plan so that they would all understand what I was teaching. I had all the kids stand up and we did problems on the board together and all did jumping jacks while screaming out numbers and what each number represented. It was such a fun morning and at the end each kid understood everything!!!! Now everyday the kids ask me to write problems in their workbooks so they can practice at home!

Clearly my Spanish is improving and I am teaching them something!

LAKE ATITLAN

I have been really fortunate in my life and have been able to see some incredible places in this world. But last weekend was definitely one of the top three most beautiful places I have gotten to see with my own eyes. Seven friends and I went to Lake Atitlan for a weekend full of adventure and fun. We started off Saturday morning with a 40 mile bike ride through the mountains and small villages surrounding the Lake. Sunday we went kayaking for two hours. While I was sitting in my kayak and surrounded by volcanoes and mountains I was in awe over what I was staring at. After kayaking we jumped off cliffs which was SO FUN and then ended with a four hour hike. It was great weekend plus it is always good to be able to explore other places in Guatemala.

NEW BEGINNINGS – MEETING THE KIDS

Monday brought about the soul purpose of why I decided to pack up my life in Florida and follow my dreams. There have been a number of occasions in my life that have filled me with joy but the moment I meet these kids my heart was filled with more happiness than I ever felt. Just seeing them smile and hug me is the most beautiful feeling in the world. In just one week these kids have stolen my heart. I AM IN LOVE!

So on Monday morning we headed up the mountains to a community about 30 minutes from Antigua, where one of the rural disadvantaged indigenous communities live. When I stepped off our bus the conditions that these people and families are living in made me stop dead in my tracks and thank God for everything I have been blessed with. We have so much yet take so much for granted. Especially the little things - taking a hot shower or having electricity etc. these people have none of it yet they are so happy.

MY CLASS: I am taking a class of 22 children, age 8-15. I will be working with these children teaching them the fundamentals of English, Math, Science, Social Studies and just about life - I am actually teaching them in Spanish. Which is a little crazy right? The hopes are that each child receives an education to be able to do something with their life.

I AM SO HAPPY AND I AM LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF MY LIFE!!

CRAZINESS – VOLCANO PACAYA

I have been dying to hike a volcano since I got here and I convinced Ana and Dina to come along so we booked a trip to do a sunset climb on Saturday. We were all under the impression that this was going to be a “good workout” boy were we WRONG! The hike started really good. The sights were beautiful and it was a great workout (which I was loving). It took about 4 miles uphill till we reached the volcano and that’s when it all happened…

We were climbing straight up with falling volcano rocks every few seconds, lava flowing inches away and under our feet. When we reached the top there was lava everywhere. You could only stand up there for a few minutes before the rubber on your shoes started to melt and then had to hike all the way down in the pitch dark. I can honestly say this is one of the craziest adventures I have ever done!!!
But seeing the lava and stars from that high up was a breathtaking moment in my life
There was definitely some scary moments but it was an amazing once in a lifetime experience that I would do again and again!

FIRST WEEK

Imagine this I am sitting in the heart of Antigua on a beautiful terrace surrounded by volcanoes learning Spanish -UNREAL!! My first week has consisted of speaking Spanish one on one for six hours everyday. It has been intense but in just one week I am communicating and comprehending much better than when I arrived. Plus I am able to carry on a mini conversation with my host family at dinner!

Every Friday night all of the volunteers get together for dinner. It is a nice chance to get to know everyone, have a few drinks and unwind from the week. There are 15 other volunteers here right now from all over the world. I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know everyone.

WELCOME TO THE UNKNOWN

Last Saturday was one of those days that I will never forget. I arrived in Guatemala City and walking down the terminal I had a million emotions running through my head. I felt as though I was stepping into the unknown and quite honestly it was liberating. I had no idea what to expect or what was going to happen...
I was greeted by friendly faces and within a few minutes I felt this sense of peace. The drive from Guatemala City to Antigua was about 45 minutes and I got to see some sights and laughed with my taxi driver. I got dropped off at a quaint little hotel, settled in and then met two of the other volunteers, Ana and Dina. Both from the UK and we all immediately formed a friendship and decided to venture around Antigua to discover what this city was made of. We walked down beautiful cobblestone streets, admiring the colorful buildings surrounded by mountains.
Sunday I got to meet my host family Duilo and Angela. They are a really sweet older couple that speaks absolutely no English! It has been good challenge attempting to communicate. I have settled in and feel that this is going to be an amazing home and experience for the next year!

GUATEMALA BOUND

Wow, I have been waiting for this day for years AND it is just hours away! My last day at home was perfect – spent with friends and family. Thanks to my great dad for making my favorite meal (homemade pizza – his pizza is the BEST) and my amazing mom for keeping me on track we finally finished packing around midnight. I’m actually surprised how little I am taking to “survive” for a year.

With everything said and done, I am amazed at how my life unfolded and everything fell into place perfectly. I really want to thank everyone who has helped make this dream come true. I couldn’t imagine doing this without your prayers, financial support and encouragement.

THE START OF IT ALL

Dear Friends and Family,

Have you ever had those feelings when your heart desires something so badly you will go to extremes to make it happen? For a few years now, my heart, soul and mind have been seeking a way to be a light where others are not by immersing myself in an unfamiliar culture. In my personal quest of following my dreams, I have interviewed with the Peace Corps, Wycliffe Ministries, and schools all over the world to teach English but it has never really felt like the “right” decision. I have spent countless hours praying and begging God for trust and patience in my life so that I may listen and hear what He desires from me. After more than a year of trying, I finally feel that I am experiencing God’s blessing and calling.

I am honored to say that I will be moving to Guatemala to volunteer in a school to teach disadvantaged and orphaned children with Global Vision International (GVI) from Jan 2010 to Jan 2011. With God’s direction and hand in this plan, I know He will use my strengths and talents allowing me to help make the world a better place. I am writing this heartfelt letter for a number of reasons. First, please keep me in your prayers as I take this leap of faith. I have resigned from an amazing job that I really enjoyed to follow God’s calling. Second, I am responsible for raising my own financial support for the next year.
